Exploring the effects that an on-site psychologist(s) has on students: A qualitative study on private tertiary institution students using in-depth interviews

Abstract

A number of private tertiary institution students display psychological challenges (Bantjes, Kagee, McGowan & Steel, 2016; Giovazolias, Leontopoulou & Triliva, 2010). This may lead to a decrease in their academic performance, well-being and mental health. Despite much excellent research on counselling explored in the past, the effects that an on-site psychologist(s) has on university students has not yet been fully explored in the South African context. The purpose of this study was to remedy the gap in the literature by particularly focusing on South African private tertiary institution students’ academic performance, well-being, and mental health in relation to the onsite psychologist(s). In-depth interviews were conducted with five private tertiary institution students. Reponses were analysed using thematic analysis and five major themes emerged. It was found that: perceived cultural and social stigma, as well as lack of expenditure, may cause a negative effect on students; an on-site psychologist had an undetermined effect on the participants’ mental health; and an on-site psychologist has had a positive impact on students’ academic performance, stress, well-being, and their need for additional support. Although the participants did not display psychological challenges, it can be said that an on-site psychologist significantly benefits a student’s academic life.
