Abstract

The growing number of people suffering from mental illness namely anxiety has been largely contributed to the growing number of technological advancements. The dominant explanation for this rapid increase seems to be linked to the hyperconnected state in which we function as a society today. Previous research to understand this trend has primarily been conducted in developed countries, while the data indicates that the hyperconnected state we live in has many negative influences on society, little to no data exist on how hyperconnectivity to social media is experienced in developing countries. A quantitative research was conducted to better understand the impact of hyperconnectivity to social media on the mental wellbeing among millennials in Cape Town. The study conducted examined the beliefs and attitude of respondents toward social media platforms.
